Mrs. Durkin Bio
Hi, I'm Linda Durkin. This is my twenty-second year of teaching second grade! I am originally from Wadsworth, Ohio, but I have lived in Shelby for over 30 years. My husband's name is Andy, and for the last eight years, we have been exploring the United States and Canada on his Harley motorcycle. My two daughters, Katie and Kristen, are Shelby graduates and have started their own careers. I also have three dogs and two grand-cats. I would have more if I could because I love animals. I have two degrees, my BS in Business is from Kent State University and my Masters in Education is from The Ohio State University.
I am honored to be part of your child's education journey and excited for a great year!
So... LET'S MAKE LEARNING OUR SUPER POWER TOGETHER!

Tuesday Music Wednesday PE and Music Thursday Guidance Friday PE *Tennis shoes and socks needed daily for recess and PE PHILOSOPHYMy philosophy of education focuses on developing the child to be a thinker and problem solver through child-centered activities adapting the rigor of the State Standards to learning and discovery. This engaged active learning will be critical to the success and achievement of each student. I recognize that each child comes into second grade with unique experiences, interests, and learning styles. I truly want to know your child and use this knowledge to guide, support, and motivate each of them. The children will have higher achievement by staying focused and giving a strong effort. Second grade has more responsibilities and different expectations than first grade. These changes will be addressed, fairly, clearly, and consistently. I still acknowledge that second graders are still children and I will create a safe, caring, and respectful environment of independent thinkers.

HOMEWORK
Homework will reinforce and reflect learning already done. It will be practice. Please be actively involved with what your child is learning daily and show them that education is important and needs valued.
POLICY
Your will have homework Monday through Thursday. PLEASE PLAN A SET TIME TO COMPLETE DAILY. At home reading credit will ONLY be given if the title and parent signature are there daily. There will be a mark shown on the progress report for homework. Please look over your child's homework folder each evening to see what is asked of them to do. CHECK FOR ACCURACY AND COMPLETION of this work. If help is needed to complete the work please provide it for them, but don't do it for them. SIGN the folder each evening to assure me that the work was looked over and completed, then have your child return the folder to school daily. I expect the work and nightly reading books to be returned the following day. If not returned or completed it will be marked as no homework done.
THINGS YOU CAN DO AT HOME
Read to your child and allow them to read with you. Then ask questions about what was read. Practice math facts for fluency and confidence.
Ask your child about school and talk about school and take an interest in what they are learning
Set time limits on the amount of computer game time and monitor TV view times.
Make sure they get enough sleep and eat a healthy dietOur school policy specifies that NO TOYS OR ELECTRONICS are to be bought to school even for recess. THIS RULE IS MADE OR MANY REASONS AND YOUR MONITORING THEIR BACKPACK DAILY WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
CLASSROOM RULES
I have high expectations for the students in our room. I expect the students to achieve to their fullest potential and to contribute in a positive manner. They need to be responsible learners and allow others the same privilege. The choices your child makes not only affects themselves, but others as well. We ask the children to follow these classroom rules.
Be Respectful
Make smart choices
Listen carefully and Follow directions quickly
Be a responsible learner
Keep their teachers and friends happy
